    Hi Guys,

Does secondary name node is configured or required from Hadoop2.0 ? If required what is the use of secondary name node as standby node is already removing the Single point of failure and also keeping the changes and edit logs in sync with the name node ?

    Thanks,
    Abhishek

    Hi Abhishek,

Secondary name node helps the name node in maintaining the edits on the cluster by recording the changes and updating periodically. But when the name node fails, the secondary name node cannot take over immediately, and the effective changes have to be made and the name node needs to be brought up to function manually. During the time, the cluster is unavailable, and a lot of data is lost.

The standby on the other hand, acts as a hot replacement. In case of failures, it automatically takes over without disturbing the overall availability of the cluster.

This answer gives a better explanation
