# How to calculate Total Float and Free Float?

Hi all,

How to determine the Total Float and Free Float calculation?

How is an activity float calculation done?

Is there any formula? Is it the sum of all the Free Floats?

I am confused regarding the difference between Free Float & Total Float.

Any help?

Regards,

A. Patel

I can understand the confusion and if I am correct this will be around the conventions used in calculation formulas. I also had struggled in the beginning but could manage to get it later.

Also try drawing some network diagrams similar to examples to get it comfortable with it.

Total Float is the amount of time activity can be delayed without delaying the project end date where as Free Float is without delaying the early start date of its successor(s). In the former next successor(s) early start can be changed. As mentioned by Mukesh, try drawing network diagram, identify critical path, near critical path and other path and perform float calculation on different path to get comfortable. Activities on the critical path have ZERO float.

Thank You Mukesh Sir and Om Sir. The answers and the link helped me to clarify the difference.
Mukesh Sir - I have read your blog few weeks back as well. They are very informative.

So what I read and understood clearly was -

Total Float (slack) = (LF date – ES date) OR (LF date – EF date)
Free Float = (ES of next Activity – EF of current Activity)

ES = Early Start and EF = Early Finish
LS = Late Start and LF = Late Finish

Thanks
