Hi Priyanka, there is a criteria for a person to attend 80% of the session but how can we track that? When a class will get counted as I am still seeing 0 class attended in my LMS. I have joined this second batch as I was not able to qualify for certification. In my first batch with gururaj (9 june - 1 july) i attended 4-5 classes I guess and among those I am sure couple of were attended more than 80% but it hasn't got counted in my account? . Though there is a tick mark but not sure why its not counting. I will appreciate your swift response.

    Hi Ravi,

Good concern raised by you. I would like to inform you that 1 class = 8 sessions. Once you will attend minimum 7 sessions out of 8 sessions from a class (min 80%), your status would get updated as 1 class attended.

So as told by you, in previous class you attended 4 to 5 sessions. This is the reason why you still cannot see 1 class attended. Please do not misunderstand the term here, 1 class (batch) = 8 sessions for Tableau course.

I hope now the concern is clear to you.

    Happy learning!!

    Hello All,

Hope you are having a good time learning Tableau. With respect to what we discussed over the past 2 sessions I have given the sample database which i used to demonstrate Joins & Data Blend.

The attached Sample Data zip will have 3 files out of which Airport data tables can be used for Data Blending example. The third file will have multiple sheets and can be used for data joins, data interpreters and Unions (Use Resource list and experience table for joins and resource list and additional resources table for unions)

Additionally I have listed down few activities which you can perform using the Sample Superstore database (Available for download in the LMS learning tools).

    Exercise:
Perform Joins and blends, whichever is relevant in the sample superstore database to identify below!
    1) Which region has more sales of Furniture category?
    2) Which region has the lowest returns for the orders in 2016? What is the number of returns for that region?
    3) Which category & sub category combination has recorded the most number of returns?
    4) Which product has generated more profit?
    5) Perform a split in customer name field into first name and last name. Identify the most commonly used first name.

    Hello Priyanka,

I have already completed the course for Tableau. However, I would like to have more realtime projects that happen in the companies. For example,
What the project is like are they the same like we have done in the course or something different than this?
How long does the projects run?
What kind of clients are there?
Whether the projects are only on Tableau Desktop or Tableau Server also?
Do we have all big clients as in - a consulting firm, working for say Wipro/TCS/or any other or do we have individual clients (retail clients) also?
I would like to have an example from an MNC company with the client details and an elaborative project flow to understand how the project flows in an organisation for tableau.
This would be a great help. because we haven't been trained on Tableau Server much so at least getting the project flow would be of great help.

    Hi Deepali,

I will try to answer your question in two parts.

First on Tableau Server: Data sources and metadata can be created only through Tableau Desktop and has to be used to modify any changes to the data sources. This data source can then be published to Tableau Server. Hence it is more relevant to learn Desktop before you proceed to Server whereas you can learn it in future to do Server Admin activities.

Next on the types of Projects/Work: Tableau is mainly used in creating executive level dashboards using its ability to publish those in servers, online and viewable through mobile phones. Say for example, In financials Revenue is coming from one file and cost is from another file, you can use Tableau to create analysis using visualizations by combining all relevant information into one area. So an executive doesn't have to struggle juggling between multiple files and look at a visual using some tabular format.
Say you have a incident management system which is more of a live database which is updated every minute, you don't have to down excel dump every hour or every day to look at the dashboard. Rather Tableau will be used to connect directly to the live data to create the dashboards and will give analysis and info to the user at real time.
Projects/Works in any company will be more towards generating dashboards which is being used by various level of people. Tableau analysis will be used as part of Business Intelligence/Data Science Teams which will perform analytics operations. More like identifying trends, patterns, anomalies, forecast, point in time data view are all generated through it.
Every Organization will have its own BI/Data Science teams to perform activities especially in financial/procurement area but not limited only to these.

Hope these answers your queries. Let me know if you need more info. Thanks.

    Hi Priyanka,

    Thanks for the clarification.

I still have one doubt regarding the session attendance. Usually on alternate weekends I have to travel and in that case sometimes its possible that I won't able to attend complete session. So let say if I attended a session for half an hour/ 1 hour (may be initially / in mid of the session) will this also be treated in attendance for respective session or will it not be accountable for same? How will it work in that case?

    Please advise.

    Thank you,
    Ravi Ameta

    Hi Ravi,

That was quick with some Impressive charts as well. However there are couple of logical issues observed in the visualization. Since I'm expecting few more people to try this out so that I can evaluate the batch, I will explain the correction and best practices before the next session in this thread.

    Thanks.

    Hi Priyanka,
I have completed the exercise what Ram has given us but I am not able to post here the URLs like other people have submitted. I have created a workbook where I have answer all the 5 questions in different worksheets and saved it on Tableau Public. Please guide me through the steps so that I can also post the answers.

    Hi Dinesh,

Good work! First to answer with the count and count distinct: Count literally counts the number of occurrences irrespective of the duplicate entries whereas count distinct ignores the duplicate entries.

    For example: Consider below Table.

    City Country
    Delhi India
    Mumbai India
    Chennai India
    New York USA
    London England

    COUNT(Country) is 5, while COUNTD(Country) is 3

Secondly on the exercise, the graphs looks good and we will discuss on the answers before our next session. The last question's answer has to be revisited. Also as a best practice, when you have a specific question you can mention the answer explicitly than to just show the graphs.

    All the best.

    Regards,
    Ram

Good work. Keep it up. However the logical error in the last question is something which has to be revisited. I will explain the same before next session.

The logic to the last question in the first exercise lies with the difference between Count and Count Distinct. After Column split is performed on Customer name to obtain first name and First Name is used as row header in work sheet as a graph, we should use COUNTD(Customer Name) to get the number of UNIQUE names sharing the same first names. Using COUNT in both Customer Name and First Name will count lot of duplicate values as same Customers would have ordered multiple times and hence multiple entries per customer. Hope this helps in understanding the same.

    Hi Ram!

Can you please help me with a couple of things:

    1. In the class can you please show a couple of examples each of using 'attribute' for filter (actual application in a business scenario) and use of parameters with condition criteria (similar to the class exercise with Top X values e.g. sales for states where total profit is >$X)

    2. how to add specific labels when there are more than 1 measures on the visualization (e.g. sales and product quantity by state)

    Thank you,

    Sh

    Hi, Team
I was answering the simulation test paper 1 so I am facing an issue here that the hands on question required tableau sample superstore data set. I do not have that data and its is not appearing on my version of tableau which I have in my laptop. I have paused the test right now but to complete the paper I will need that data set to get the correct answer. Please guide me through or kindly provide the data set so that I can complete the questions.
    Thanks

    Hi Ram,
Can you please answer this question from the exercise file 6.1 on calculations...
Create one more calculation to determine Sales Goal using the set and the previously created calculated field.
    16. Type the formula below: IF MIN([States with 100+ Customers])= TRUE THEN SUM([Sales])*1.3 ELSE 100* [Average sales per customer] END
so my question is why we are multiplying by 1.3 because this is not asked in the question. what is asked is increase sales by 20%....
Secondly can you please explain this question in next live sessions.
    Thanks

    Hi Naveen,

Good work and nice to see the highlighter option. Parameter was a good addition as well, however what is not explained is that how that parameter is connected to the graph as the parameter selections doesn't refresh the chart. Please check if the calculations are included. All the best.

    Regards,
    Ram

    Good finding RC.

What is more to be observed is how the tree map has that disintegrating effect. Try to learn by getting to the workbook.

    Hi Chetna,

I'm sure it should be available in LMS data sets from learning tools. If not will check with Priyanka to get the same.

    Regards,
    Ram

    2. Create a graph to show the products which was ordered maximum quantity/no of times
    3. Which product is taking more time to get delivered on on average
    4. Identify the product which took maximum number of days to ship under first class ship mode

    Hi Chetna,

Good work and nice to see you trying different options available in the visuals. Please find my below review comments.

    1. The region parameter and Product Name parameter has a bit of interlinking issues. The product name parameter is working fine if the region is selected as All. However for different regions, the no of products to be viewed is limited. Basically the ranking for the products is done and the parameter is working in such way. For e.g., Try selecting South region and 1 in Product name parameter, there is no entry shown.
    2. When the questions are specific its better to call out the answer in captions explicitly so that you don't leave the users guessing.

Rest is all impressive. Keep practicing. All the best.

    Regards,
    Ram

    HI All,
Has anyone experience an error like the attached when trying to save to Tableau public? I'm able to save the first time, but from then on out, I can't overwrite or use Save As without getting the attached error.

    Hi Priyanka,
I have completed my syllabus & want to proceed with the simulation test paper 1 but when I reach to question 16 which is a practical question they have asked for Tableau sample superstore data set. Now I am confused that which data set should I go for, the one provided in the LMS or the Tableau saved superstore data set. Please guide me through because I don't have Tableau saved sample superstore and I am not able to finish my test. So please help me in providing the data set as it is not showing in my version of tableau which I have in my laptop.
If you have any other information regarding simulation test paper please assist me through.
    looking forward for your reply.
    Thanks
