    Hi All,

Sorry to keep you waiting. Hope you are having some fun time learning Tableau. Here you go with the first exercise of the class.

    Exercise 1:

Perform Joins and blends, whichever is relevant in the sample superstore database to identify below!
    1) Which region has more sales of Furniture category?
    2) Which region has the lowest returns for the orders in 2016? What is the number of returns for that region?
    3) Which category & sub category combination has recorded the most number of returns?
    4) Which product has generated more profit?
    5) Perform a split in customer name field into first name and last name. Identify the most commonly used first name.

This is in addition with the files uploaded to the Google drive for practice.

    Regards,
    Ram

    Hi Ram.

This is my worksheet for exercise 1
    https://public.tableau.com/profile/...7#!/vizhome/Excercise-1_1/MostNumberofreturns

when i am converting dimension to a measure , for example i have changed returned dimension(Referring to sample super store - Returns) to a measure in the data pane , once i do this change automatically tableau will set (count of distinct for the measure created) , can you please guide me on how to change this default setting in the data pane so that i get only count instead of count of distinct because if i pull this measure to marks area or rows/columns i end up manually changing from count of distinct to count .

    Thanks
    Krishna

    Hi Krishna,

I understood that you are trying to convert a dimension to a measure. While a number data type can be automatically converted, you cannot just convert a text to measure for the obvious reasons where you cannot do any aggregations. Hence when you convert a text dimension into measure, it will convert it into numbers by putting some aggregations like Min, Max, Count or Count distinct to it.

    Regards,
    Ram

    Hi Kshitij,

Now that we have covered visualizations, you have to be sure of what chart serves what purpose. The bubble charts and tree maps may not be sufficient when the questions are straight forward. Also the question number 1, the chart is to be on the products level. Otherwise, good creativity. Keep learning.

    Hi All,

    Please find exercise # 3

    Dataset: Sample Superstore

    1. How many city names are common between two states?
    2. Which are the states that lost money?
    3. What is the trend of profit in central region by every quarter?
    4. Use Calculated fields to split Customer ID and find out how many names share same initials (Hint - the alphabets in customer ID)
    5. Create a unit chart to show the sale of products by sub category for the year 2017. Use region as color marks and number of quantity as details. Also try displaying 1 mark (any shape) for 25 quantity.
