For instance, when planning an iteration, how long should stories be? What about stories for a product road map?

Stories should be sized according to their purpose. If you are only planning an iteration, then you should make sure that your story is small enough to be completed in that iteration.

Some stories might span multiple iterations, especially ones appearing on a product roadmap.

The biggest mistake you can make is to make your stories too large. If your team is having to break down stories near end of iteration, it's usually a sign the stories are too large. Often, this type of thing is done to descope and meet iteration requirements.

Any Story bigger than size 8 is a risk and shall be broken into smaller stories as it may not be reasonable to accomplish it in a sprint(of 2 weeks).
